John Kelly has performed at hundreds of venues, including nightclubs, concert halls and museums. Kelly’s club performances, which expanded ideas of Drag and performance art, began in New York in the early 1980s at the Mudd Club, the Pyramid Club, Club 57 and Danceteria. He enjoyed further notoriety with his rendition of Joni Mitchell as the closing act of the legendary Wigstock festival (1986–2005). Theatrical venues include the Brooklyn Academy of Music, Brooklyn, NY; the American Academy in Rome, Italy; Carnegie Hall, Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center, The Kitchen, Dance Theater Workshop, Central Park Summerstage, PS 122, Creative Time, St. Mark’s Church, The Joyce Theatre, New York, NY; Yale Repertory Theatre, New Haven, CT; Alley Theatre, Houston, TX; and the Spoleto Festival, Spoleto, Italy. Performances at museums include the Walker Arts Center, Minneapolis, MN; the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, CA; the Warhol Museum, Pittsburgh, PA; Baltimore Art Museum, Baltimore, MD; and the Tate Modern, London, United Kingdom.
Kelly has been honored with numerous awards, including fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, the New York Foundation for the Arts, the Guggenheim Foundation, Art Matters, and CalArts/Alpert Foundation. He is the recipient of an American Choreographer Award, a New York Dance and Performance Award (Bessie), and multiple Village Voice OBIE Awards for Performance. Residencies include the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study, Harvard University; Yaddo; MacDowell; and the American Academy in Rome.
