Polly Apfelbaum: Crazy Love, Love Crazy
Contemporary Art Museum, St. Louis
Polly Apfelbaum: Crazy Love, Love Crazy is a solo project featuring New York-based artist Polly Apfelbaum who is known for her site-specific floor installations that are comprised of hundreds of intensely dyed pieces of fabric that explore issues of domesticity, femininity, and decoration. Responding to our physical space, Apfelbaum was inspired by the various light qualities that flood the galleries and the unique patterns found within the concrete building. Apfelbaum revisits Wharholian flower iconography that she has referenced in earlier sculptural work as a means to return to a vested interest in the formal qualities of line, the mark and drawing. The simplicity of the artist’s rendering is found in hundreds of gestural flower outlines on hand cut synthetic velvet. Working with the subtle light differences the gallery spaces present, Apfelbaum has created two flower floor plinths: one warm in various tones of red, orange, and pink and one cool in shades of blue, green, and turquoise. In addition to Apfelbaum’s new sprawling site-specific floor installations, a series of 20 inch x 24 inch Polaroids will be exhibited as well that depict details of the artist’s hand-cut flowers.
