From Christo to Kiefer
Kunstmuseum Pablo Picasso Münster

With around 100 paintings, sculptures, photographs, drawings, and video and sound installations, the exhibition From Christo to Kiefer brings together contemporary positions that have been of decisive importance in the last 50 years.

Artists such as Nan Goldin, Cy Twombly, On Kawara, Ellsworth Kelly, Denis Oppenheim, Richard Long, Louise Lawler et al. exemplify the keen intuition of the collector Yvon Lambert, who from the 1960s assembled the works in a unique collection that has never been exhibited in Germany before. The fledgling art styles of Minimal Art, Land Art and Conceptual Art of those days became known and established in Europe through his work.

The exhibition presents conceptual plays on words and sketches by Bruce Nauman alongside the scaled-down works of Carl Andre and Sol LeWitt. Jean-Michel Basquiat’s graffiti-like paintings meet works by Cy Twombly and Anselm Kiefer and the unconventional material mix and figurative style of Julian Schnabel.

The exhibition is unmistakably a bridge to the many artists who have already participated in the Sculpture Projects of past decades, including Carl Andre, Douglas Gordon, Jenny Holzer, Sol LeWitt, Richard Long and Bruce Nauman. As a “satellite project” the work “Pure Consciousness” by the Japanese artist On Kawara is an official station of the Sculpture Projects in the Picasso Museum’s entrance foyer.
