Key to the City

Traditionally, keys to a city are given by a mayor to a hero or dignitary as a symbol of free entrance. Paul Ramírez Jonas, in collaboration with Creative Time, created a new Key to the City that belonged to the public. In a kiosk in New York City’s Times Square, participants bestowed each other a key to the city for reasons which held personal, rather than historical, significance. With this new key, the public had an opportunity to reflect upon common space in the city. Participants given further awareness of the city as a series of locked and unlocked spaces, as the keys were used the key to unlock 24 specific sites across the five boroughs of New York.
