Ricardo Brey and Luis Camnitzer are featured in group exhibition, Bienal Internacional de Estandartes (1996–2014) at Museo Universitario del Chopo, Mexico City, Mexico, will be on view April 18–August 31, 2026.
Museo Universitario del Chopo's press release follows:
This exhibition showcases the role of the artist Marta Palau (Spain, 1934 - Mexico, 2022) as a cultural manager who spent decades promoting and accompanying the careers of many other artists. Conceived by Palau for the Centro Cultural Tijuana (CECUT), the Bienal Internacional de Estandartes emerged in 1996 as an annual salon aimed at encouraging encounters between artists from Baja California and international creators, bringing together emerging practices and established careers. In order to encourage the international circulation of these pieces, the call for submissions established that they should be made on a flexible material that can be rolled up, allowing them to be easily transported. The decision to exhibit standards was a response to the dimensions of the CECUT hall.
From 1982 to 1986, Palau organized the Salón Michoacano Internacional del Textil en Miniatura, which can be seen as the direct antecedent to the biennial. Here, she promoted the production of textile pieces that were small in scale so that they could be shown elsewhere. She thus managed to explore the potential of textiles as a contemporary medium while building networks for artistic exchange that anticipated the international spirit that would come to characterize the biennial.
