IK Foundation has invited visual artists Elly Strik and Ricardo Brey to contribute to the research into the comprehensive meaning of the term ‘key work’.
When is a work a key work? What meaning does it have for the maker? Is it important to the viewer? How can this exploration be used to promote access to art?
‘Key work’ is not only used in the arts, but also in literature, for example. The search for a definition yields a variety of descriptions and views. It is a word that apparently appeals to the imagination.
IK Foundation sees this concept as an interesting starting point for its own research. A number of artists are invited to reflect on this from their individual perspective and experience. They assess whether the term ‘key work’ has (had) a meaning in their personal development. They translate the outcome of their considerations into a number of works with an explanatory text. In the future, collectors and professionals will also be invited to contribute.
In 2023, S.M.A.K. in Ghent combined Saturno devorando a uno de sus hijos (Saturn devouring one of his children, 2012) by Ricardo Brey with Freud’s Sofa (2007–2012) by Elly Strik. It was a first visual encounter between their works and opened up unexpected associations.
The mental space created by this extended beyond the visual confrontation between the two monumental works. Elly Strik and Ricardo Brey carefully selected a new visual encounter for the space of Stichting IK, named TENDRILS. Doing so, they intensify their poetic and metaphysical reflections, each from their own coherence.
The opening of the exhibition is on Friday, September 4, 2026, from 4 to 6.30 pm. The exhibition can be seen until Sunday, November 15, 2026, on Saturday and Sunday between 2 and 5 pm and by appointment. The exhibition can then be visited until November 29, 2026, by appointment only.
