The artist Ronny Quevedo, born in Guayaquil, Ecuador, in 1981 confronts the evolution of the drawing technique, but also the connection with his origins, in a large-scale site-specific work for the Menil Institute of Drawing, in Houston, Texas.
This institute is part of The Menil Collection, a space founded in 1987 by art collectors John and Dominique Menil. The site is made up of several buildings, such as the Institute of Drawing, as well as the main museum – which was designed by architect Renzo Piano – the Cy Twombly gallery, Dan Flavin's installation in the Richmond Hall and the Fresco building. The collection covers periods from the prehistoric era, medieval and Byzantine art, modern art and contemporary art. Of the latter, the Menils promote their creation through scholarships and commissions for artists, as is the case of Ronny Quevedo, a graduate of the Yale Art School. In a 10-meter-high triptych, entitled "C A R A A C A R A", Quevedo draws what has been the evolution of his drawing technique on wax paper where he traces patterns, a way of working that began in 2015.
