Dozens of people gathered in the Enrique Díaz de León Auditorium to hear Uruguayan conceptual artist Luis Camnitzer speak at the Julio Cortázar Latin American Chair.
The academic and educator, who has been active since the 1960s, presented his reflections on new technologies and art to the audience in the keynote address "Art, Simón Rodríguez, and Artificial Intelligence," accompanied by academics Gerardo Lammers Pérez and Gerardo Gutiérrez Cham.
Camnitzer was born in Lübeck, Germany , but grew up in Montevideo, Uruguay , where he trained at the School of Fine Arts and later at the Munich Academy.
During the Chair he confessed that the appearance of chatbots , a few years ago, such as ChatGPT, Grok and DeepSeek, generated fear in him about how the social dynamics around them would change , the loss of jobs, the logic of generating profits in a capitalist system that thinks in infinity and that in some cases only responds to a political agenda like that of the social network X.
He then recounted an anecdote. When he questioned chatbots about the ongoing genocide against the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip , the AI initially justified the actions of the State of Israel, only to later qualify its actions in subsequent interactions.
“If we want to survive, I mean literally, it's the humanities and the arts that need to be revisited, nurtured, and updated in the context of AI, because that's where we can maintain and hone our power to generate collective consciousness,” he said.
He asserted that chatbots and artificial intelligence in general are not our enemies per se , but we should not let them take over our decision-making.

Decenas de personas se dieron cita en el Paraninfo Enrique Díaz de León para escuchar al artista conceptual uruguayo Luis Camnitzer en la Cátedra Latinoamericana “Julio Cortázar”.
El académico y pedagogo, quien ha estado en activo desde la década de 1960, presentó ante los asistentes sus reflexiones sobre las nuevas tecnologías y el arte en la conferencia magistral “Arte, Simón Rodríguez y la Inteligencia Artificial”, en compañía de los académicos Gerardo Lammers Pérez y Gerardo Gutiérrez Cham.
Camnitzer nació en Lübeck, Alemania, pero creció en Montevideo, Uruguay, en donde se formó en la Escuela de Bellas Artes y posteriormente en la Academia de Múnich.
Durante la Cátedra confesó que la aparición de los chatbots, hace unos años, como ChatGPT, Grok y DeepSeek, le generó temor de cómo cambiarían las dinámicas sociales alrededor de ellas, las pérdidas de empleos, la lógica de generar ganancias en un sistema capitalista que piensa en el infinito y que en algunos casos solo responde a una agenda política como la de la red social X.
Relató entonces una anécdota. Cuando le cuestionó a chatbots sobre el genocidio abierto en la Franja de Gaza contra el pueblo palestino, en una primera respuesta la IA justificaba el actuar del Estado de Israel para después matizar sus acciones en siguientes interacciones.
“Si queremos sobrevivir, lo digo literalmente, son las humanidades y las artes las que tienen que ser revisadas, alimentadas y actualizadas en el contexto de las IAs, porque es ahí donde podemos mantener y perfeccionar nuestro poder para generar una conciencia colectiva”, indicó.
Aseguró que los chatbots y las inteligencias artificiales en general no son nuestros enemigos per se, pero no debemos dejar que tomen el poder de nuestras decisiones.
