A changeable landscape of bodies.
The Jewish Museum.
Self-love, self-hate, vulnerability, sex: It’s all present in this master of flesh’s paintings from the artist’s point of view. The bodies here come in an array of palettes, from the almost blandly photorealistic tones in a 1978 self-portrait to Purple Diagonal from 1980, in which colors flow into hallucinogenic sluices. The panoply of human contours makes us feel so exposed it almost hurts. —Jerry Saltz
