Names that emerged in the arts amidst the pandemic bring social, ethnic, and gender debates to the forefront.

Amid the difficulties of the pandemic, opportunities have opened up in the visual arts circuit. O GLOBO asked collectors which new artists have sparked their interest since last year. The names mentioned point to an increased attention from the circuit and institutions to artists who work on issues related to racial, gender, and territorial debates, within an assessment of the historical gaps in collections.

With works ranging from around R$1,000 to R$50,000, considered entry-level prices, these artists also share a common engagement on social media. Fabio Szwarcwald, a collector of contemporary art and executive director of MAM-Rio, sees issues related to the most pressing debates occupying spaces in private and institutional collections.

Exhibited at the last Frieze in New York in May, and currently at the Tanya Bonakdar Gallery in the same city, the voluptuous nudes painted by Márcia Falcão allowed the Rio de Janeiro native to find her form of expression. Living in Irajá with her mother and two daughters, the painter graduated from the School of Fine Arts (EBA) at UFRJ in 2010, but abandoned her professional career upon marrying and giving birth to Beliana and Beatriz (6 and 4 years old, respectively). In 2018 and 2019, in classes at the School of Visual Arts (EAV) at Parque Lage, Márcia developed a style that caught the attention of names like Adriana Varejão.

Em meio às dificuldades da pandemia, oportunidades se abriram no circuito das artes visuais. O GLOBO perguntou a colecionadores que novos artistas despertaram o interesse desde o ano passado. Os nomes mencionados apontam uma atenção do circuito e de instituições a artistas que trabalham questões relacionadas ao debate racial, de gênero e territorialidade, dentro de uma avaliação das lacunas históricas dos acervos.

Com obras que começam em torno de R$ 1 mil e vão à casa dos R$ 50 mil, valores considerados de início de carreira, os artistas também têm em comum o engajamento em suas redes sociais. Colecionador de arte contemporânea e diretor-executivo do MAM-Rio, Fabio Szwarcwald vê pautas ligadas aos debates mais urgentes ocuparem espaços em acervos privados e institucionais.
