The Museu de Arte do Rio (MAR) launches its new exhibition, “Nossa Vida Bantu” (Our Bantu Life), on Saturday, May 31. MAR’s flagship exhibition of the year highlights the significant role played by peoples from various African countries—collectively referred to by the linguistic term “Bantu”—in shaping Brazilian culture and national identity. Expressions such as "dengo", "caçula", and "farofa"; traditions like "congadas" and "folias"; and technologies involving metallurgy and leatherworking are among the cultural elements we have inherited and reimagined from Bantu culture. Presented by the Instituto Cultural Vale and curated by Marcelo Campos and Amanda Bonan alongside guest curator Tiganá Santana, the exhibition also benefited from the collaboration of consultants such as Salloma Salomão, Abreu Paxe, Wanderson Flor, and Margarida Petter.
